This illustrated exploration of the central ways plants and place appear in Steinbeck’s works, shines a new light on his prescient approach to ecology, environmentalism, and the human condition.

John Steinbeck’s literary vision is grounded in place—first in Central California, where he was born and lived until he was 41. From childhood he was restless, and gradually he became a troubadour of the Americas, traversing the U.S. and Mexico. Throughout his long writing life—his works span the years 1929 to 1966—his vision as a writer was fundamentally holistic and ecological: to understand people, you had to know something about the places they occupied, their landscapes, their histories, their spirits. This book brings a new focus on Steinbeck’s landscapes, and how they figure in the plot of almost every single one of his books to reflect, cast a harsh light upon, or magnify the action. For Steinbeck, place fundamentally shaped human experience and the human spirit. All life is connected.
