Hannah Kirshner

About the Author

Hannah Kirshner is a Japan-based journalist, and author and illustrator of Water, Wood and Wild Things: Learning Craft and Cultivation in a Japanese Mountain Town, which won an International Gourmand “Best in the World” award. She reports on Japanese craftsmanship and foodways for publications including The Atlantic,, The New York Times, T Magazine, and Food & Wine, and frequently contributes to the Proof podcast (from America’s Test Kitchen). Recently, she has been exploring these subjects through a climate and environment lens, while participating in the Solutions Journalism Network Climate Initiative fellowship. Hannah grew up on a small farm in the Pacific Northwest, studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), then eventually made her way to New York and Japan. Since 2015, she has been splitting her time between Brooklyn and Yamanaka, the rural town that is the subject of her first book.
