Hugh Lofting

About the Author

Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) was born in Berkshire, England. He was an author and civil engineer best known for creating Doctor Dolittle, the iconic children’s book character who could talk to animals. Beginning with The Story of Doctor Dolittle (1920), Lofting wrote fifteen novels and story collections featuring the character, and won the 1922 Newbery Medal for The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle.
