Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” comes to life for young readers in this enchantingly illustrated picture book of the classic spooky poem.

Once upon a midnight dreary . . .

So begins the story of a man and his unusual encounter with a raven on a dark winter’s night in Edgar Allan Poe’s infamous “The Raven.” The man’s struggle with his deep sadness at the loss of the love his life is heightened with the arrival of the raven, who sits watching him, and only uttering a single word: nevermore. As the night grows darker, the man tries to escape the shadows of his grief before it is too late.

Poe’s beloved and mysterious poem is brought to life for young readers and adult fans alike by Chloe Bristol’s rich, moody illustrations. The Raven is the perfect book to snuggle in and read as a family during the Halloween season or on any blustery, cold day.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, and died in 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was an American short story writer, poet, critic, and editor who is famous for his cultivation of mystery and the macabre. His poem "The Raven" (published in 1845) is among the best-known poems in American literature.

  • “In this handsome new book, Bristol gives (“The Raven”) a reverential treatment, presenting the complete text in an appropriately moody Victorian Gothic interior, all loose, sketchy lines filled in with rich, earthy greens, browns, and purples. …This elegant treatment of Poe’s work will find a place on the shelves of erudite readers with an appetite for sophisticated language and Gothic atmosphere.”
    School Library Journal
  • "A masterpiece in creepy rhymes for Halloween or darker times…  Good stuff."
    Kirkus Reviews
  • "Poe's famous poem comes to life for young readers with evocative illustrations.”
