As Earth rages around us and the powers-that-be neglect it, many of us are feeling disempowered and at a loss on how to proceed, partly because the conversation around environmentalism has become inaccessible to many and has long ignored the essential role that racial and social equity play in the survival of our planet. Environmental activist, influencer, and author Isaias Hernandez aims to make the complex and often obscured discussions around environmental literacy accessible to everyone, particularly those who are awakening to their complicity in climate destruction but feel powerless to effect change.

Dear Environmentalist serves as both a primer and a call to action, inviting readers to understand their role in the broader ecosystem, and empowering them with knowledge to advocate for a just and sustainable world.” At the same time that this book edifies and challenges the factors that have obscured empowerment and hampered the necessary fight for environmental justice, it imbues readers with hope, wakes them to the essential role of community in the quest for repair and progress, and ultimately empowers them with the passion and knowledge to act toward true progress.

About the Author

Isaias Hernandez is a Mexican-American environmentalist, educator, and writer devoted to improving environmental literacy through research, storytelling, and public speaking. Isaias is more commonly known by his moniker, QueerBrownVegan: the independent media platform he started in 2019 to bring environmental education to all. His journey to deconstruct and communicate complex environmental issues, while centering accessibility, diversity, and authenticity has resonated with a worldwide audience.

Growing up as a first-generation, low-income student, his experiences with the environment informed the way he saw the world, which eventually led him to earn his B.S. in Environmental Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He has produced and written his own climate-independent YouTube web series, Teaching Climate Together, which exists to bring environmental education to everyone by working with scientists, researchers, and community leaders. His web series serves as a form of civic media, reaching hundreds of thousands of people per episode, while creating educational field trips that help people reconnect with nature and become advocates for the rights of nature.

Isaias has been featured in several noteworthy publications, including the digital cover of VOGUE alongside Billie Eilish and seven other environmental activists, New York Times, The Guardian, and Business Insider. Isaias has spoken at various academic institutions like UC Berkeley, Harvard, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
