Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Anne of Green Gables, the first in a series of “Anne” books by Montgomery, was published in 1908 to immediate success and continues to be a perennial favorite. 

Johanna Louise Spyri (1827–1901) wrote more than 50 stories and books. But she is best known for Heidi, the story of an orphan who goes to live with her grandfather on the mountain. 

Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was a British novelist and playwright. She is best known for the three children’s novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885–86), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911).

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. She left to attend college, but later returned to teach and write stories set on her home island. Anne of Green Gables, the first in a series of “Anne” books by Montgomery, was published in 1908 to immediate success and continues to be a perennial favorite.

About the Author

Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) was born Johanna Louise Heusser in Hirzel, Switzerland. In 1852, she moved to Zurich, where she began to write stories about life in the country. Although she wrote more than fifty stories before passing away, Johanna Spyri is best known for Heidi, the story of an orphan who goes to live with her grandfather on the mountain.
