Inspired wisdom for gardeners based on a plant collector’s dreamy, four-season greenhouse.

A greenhouse is every gardener’s dream. Especially in colder climates, when you have to wait all winter until the garden wakes up again. A greenhouse makes it possible to raise a huge variety of plants, including rare specimens from around the world. A greenhouse can be stylish, a place for year-round experimentation, a showcase of color, a space to start plants that eventually go into the garden, and a tropical refuge in the colder months just steps from your door. GREENHOUSE DREAMHOUSE is a lush tour of a plant collector’s paradise that will inspire both the greenhouse owner who wants to go deep, and the everyday gardener who might not ever have a greenhouse but wants to dream. And why shouldn’t we dream?

GREENHOUSE DREAMHOUSE introduces four types of greenhouse grower: The Artisan, The Horticulturist, The Collector, and The Utilitarian, and explores the various ways a greenhouse can be curated to meet a gardener’s personal taste. With beautiful photos of both rare and familiar plants, and detailed information how they function under glass, Matt Mattus offers notes on projects like raising acacia trees from seed, training woody topiary, collecting bulbs varieties from around the world, how to style your greenhouse beds, how to propagate from cuttings, and so much more. This is a book for anyone who just can’t get enough of plants, plants, plants.

Matt Mattus is Senior Director of Horticulture at the American Horticultural Society and a longtime leader in the gardening world. He has served as a trustee of the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill and as past president of the North American Rock Garden Society. A widely published writer, his work appears in leading gardening magazines, and he is the author of Mastering the Art of Flower Gardening and Mastering the Art of Vegetable Gardening. Matt lives and gardens with his partner of forty years, Joseph Philip, on the same property where his parents and grandfather gardened before him—a continuity of place that spans more than 125 years. Together they remain deeply involved in New England’s plant societies, often opening their greenhouse in winter and their gardens in summer to fellow plant enthusiasts. They share their home with three much-loved Irish Terriers.
