Using emojis to communicate actually expands our emotional range. People who make positive digital connections with just three other humans a day experience lower rates of depression. Others who are exposed even briefly to memes related to mental health recovery report feeling more in control of their emotions. Turns out the possibilities for improving our emotional state are as wide-ranging as the internet itself. Pavliscak shows readers how we can open our phones each day (from bed), and rather than anxiety-spiral, we can foster all the good feels.

About the Author

Pamela Pavliscak studies the future of feelings. As a researcher, she creates experiments that challenge us to see technology―and ourselves―in new ways, and to understand how technology can help us be human. Pavliscak’s work with organizations like Google, IKEA, The New York Public Library, and Virgin draws designers, decision-makers, and community members into creative collaboration. She’s also co-founder of SoundingBox, a new online research platform. Her insights have appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, NPR, Slate, and Quartz. She’s spoken at SXSW, TEDx, TNW, and Web Summit, among many others. Currently, Pavliscak is on faculty at Pratt Institute where she teaches the next generation of tech designers.
