Imagine a place where gardens feed families and neighbors, where children learn with their hands in the soil, where chefs cook from the day’s harvest, where music gathers the community, and where the ordinary practices of growing, eating, making, and finding peace become a way of life.

This is the world of Ecotopia.

At the center of the book is The Ecology Center, a 28-acre regenerative organic farm and ecological education center in San Juan Capistrano, California. Set on a historic agricultural property now surrounded by suburban sprawl, The Ecology Center has grown from a one-acre dirt lot into a thriving community ecosystem: farm fields, orchards, a Farm Stand, Cafe, chef-led farm-to-table dinners, artist collaborations, seasonal festivals, wellness practices, and an outdoor school for children and families. Founded by surfer, farmer, and agroecologist Evan Marks, The Ecology Center is both a working farm and a living demonstration of another way to build culture around food. Its philosophy is simple: grow, eat, make, and peace. Through these four practices, Ecotopia offers a window into a place where regenerative agriculture, ecological education, local food systems, beauty, community life, and environmental stewardship are treated as part of the same living system. Ecotopia tells the story of a farm becoming a village, and a village becoming a model for what the future can feel like when people come back into relationship with land, food, and one another.

Evan Marks

About the Author

Evan Marks is the founder and executive director of The Ecology Center, a nonprofit organization in San Juan Capistrano dedicated to building healthy communities through food, farming, and ecological education. A lifelong surfer, farmer, and systems thinker, Evan’s work is rooted in the belief that thriving ecosystems and thriving communities belong to the same conversation. Evan studied Agroecology, with an emphasis on sustainable agriculture, at the University of California, Santa Cruz. After graduating, he spent nearly a decade working in ecological design and regenerative agriculture across California, Hawaii, and internationally, including Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, Ghana, and Nigeria. These experiences shaped his understanding of how traditional knowledge, local food systems, and hands-on learning can restore land, livelihood, and culture. In 2008, Evan founded The Ecology Center on a one-acre dirt lot in Orange County. Under his leadership, it has grown into a 28-acre regenerative farm, ecological education center, and living demonstration of what community-rooted systems can look like in practice. Through apprenticeship programs, school field trips, the Farm Stand, chef dinners, workshops, festivals, and the daily life of the farm, Evan continues to invite people into direct relationship with the source of their nourishment. His work is helping put the culture back into agriculture.
